up to dark, forboding skies
winter's gloomy chill

too much time on their hands and
I'm sure glad they do!

spectacular, what's to see inside this place
that so sharply contrasts with the complete and total
grey that encompasses this city, outside these walls

I lost myself
in Monet's waterlilies
and hoped to never
be found

imagine, living in a house like this
waking up every morning and tending to a bevy of fireplaces,
but alas, I could sleep there for years,
not knowing that there was a pea under my mattress,
so since I'm not really a princess,
it would be a complete waste
to live in a house like this.

deer crossing signs
dot the shoulders of the road
while hawks sit,
regal, visible in barren trees
not in couples or in families
but singly, one every mile or half-mile

once in a while one swoops into the median,
interrupting the monotony
of the endless broken
white line separating me from others
heading to where I have just been

why are they called highways
and not longways?
because they seem very long

one minute,
you're zipping down the road,
singing along with the radio,
like you always do,
chewing gum,
sipping coffee,
trying to keep a nice constant
bit of space between you
and the woman in the SUV behind you
or the man on a motorcycle passing to the left of you
or the guy whose truck
just crashed into the guardrail,
whose truck bursts into flames,
so you wait and wait and wait
for eight minutes that seem like eight hours
and suddenly the road is full of red
blinking lights
your ears are full of screaming sirens
and you understand in a whole new way
how precious every minute is

as long as the Surgeon General
tells us to find a way to get more fiber
into our diet
I figure I can do my part
by continuing to support fabric shops
bring it home,
wash it,
paint it and stamp it
a fiber boost
really does make you feel better

Resolutions:

1. Pray
2. Listen
3. Pray harder
4. Wait
5. Keep praying

And nothing else
is really in our hands,
is it?
